the most over-rated horse ever. Was and maybe still is the highest rated son of Galileo thus far, barring what Frankel may achieve. How is he rated higher than New Approach ever was??....ridiculous.
@bgardiner2000 He should have ran in the Arc, Watch the 2009 Derby, clearly stays, just distinct lack of milers at Ballydoyle, forced AOB to make him one.
I believe Dick Turpin may have encountered the same problem in this race that Poet's Voice encountered in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket. A pure miler that was trying to be stretched out to 10 furlongs for the first time in both's career. Against G1 horses that regularly thrive at 10+furlongs. Likely that 9 furlongs would be about the max for both Dick Turpin and Poet's Voice. Based on their run's in this race and the Champion Stakes. JMO.
I think this field, top to bottom, is the best field that Rip Van Winkle has ever defeated in his career. It shows what he is capable of accomplishing at times. That said, I think Rip is a good colt. He's not a great colt. His achievements in racing do not support the huge reputation he carries, at all. Well beaten by Cape Blanco at Leopardstown. Then beaten by Poet's Voice over a mile at Ascot. 14-5-4-0 with 5 out of money finishes is hardly great. I like Rip. But he's a very beatable horse.
The market sign's to this race pretty much hit the mark dead on. Most handicappers or punters figured Rip Van Winkle, Byword, or Twice Over to win this race. The three were much the best in the race, too. Dick Turpin also got some backing on his 8 furlong form. With the hope that he'd do as well over 10+furlongs. Happy to see Cavalryman run a much better race than he ran at Ascot in the Prince of Wales Stakes. I think 12 furlongs suits Cavalryman better. I look for a big Arc run from him again.
@Newworldman66, for what it's worth. I'm the guy that 99.9% of the time is constantly saying that Rip Van Winkle is the most over-hyped horse I've ever seen. Check some of my remarks from this year's Sussex Stakes. Where I flat out said that Aidan O'Brien has acted as "minister of propaganda" with this colt since his 3yr.old season in 2009. O'Brien has always made Rip out to be the "second coming." This is one of the very few races he got over-hyped for that he actually didn't flop.
@GBeret83 I think you're exaggerating his feat, he was the 7/4 fav after all. That said RVW was all out to beat a 123 rated horse in Twice Over. Without the extended 0.4 of a furlong he would have lost. RVW is a good horse but he's no superstar. Imo he ran his race here as he did in his previous outing in the Sussex stakes. He's a 124/5 horse although his official rating remains at an inflated 129.
I be the first to admit. Given how long it had been since Rip had ran his huge Coral-Eclipse in 2009 over 10+furlongs. That a field with this many G1 winners in the race would prove too difficult for Rip to defeat them all. I was very wrong. Rip ran really strong to get up and clip Twice Over in the shadow of the post. Well done Sir Rip Van Winkle. My hat is certainly off. Also, I thought a bit more of an encouraging effort from Cavalryman than he's shown thus far in 2010. JMO.

RVW never looked like getting to them until he did. He actually looked in this race that he could go a mile and a half.
