Animated by Tommy Simms
Fall 2010
This animation was done for a "Contemporary Myth" project in one of my Drawing classes at UWM. I chose to contemporize the myth of Hercules - specifically the battle he has with the Hydra (the monster that regrows new heads once one is removed).
In this Animation based on the style of William Kentridge, I was given the idea to make it a political cartoon about the battle between Democrats and Republicans. Hercules is portrayed by President Obama, while an elephant, the symbol for the Republican party, stands in place of the Hydra. As the elephant attacks Obama, he removes its trunk. Shortly after, three new trunks grow. These regenerating trunks represent the never-ending issues Obama has to face as president.
The camera is a bit choppy because I couldn't use a tri-pod (or any camera stand) above this 24"x36" charcoal drawing without getting its legs in the shot.
This animation has no sound.
