Sir Ranulph Fiennes has spent most of his working life in danger and discomfort. You can tell by looking at his left hand, where the tips of several fingers have been lost to frostbite. But you'd never guess from his tone of voice. He describes everything with the same nonchalance - gangrene, hypothermia, severe sunburn, starvation, polar-bear attacks, even mercenary warfare.

"Expedition leading (which used to be called exploration) is a profession," he told a 400-strong audience of the London Business Forum at the Purcell Room, Southbank Centre. "My motivation always has been and still is to pay the gas bill, like you do."...

  • i love this guys honesty ! and yea, they can not have people with them that can nto help, so - sak-ing them is right. I am an adapter, a quick one. My life has been ? very good, and bad. But all for the good. These men and women who have the time and funds to do this, are very fortunate.

The above article if true paints a rather unflattering portrait of a ruthless opportunist.

  • Amazing achievements and modest with it. You'd want him on your team.

  • @burmanhands Talking of "heroes" lost any & all respect for Fiennes . Whilst "plugging" his new book on the BBC News 28.09.2011, he has gone on record as stating that he does not think that members of MH Foces serving in warzones are in any way Heroes. Given his past associations with 22 reg SAS, talk about so called game keeper turned poacher, Shame on you Hypocrite. As an explorer, you have CHOSEN your destinations. Our Lads in uniform are SENT.... NO CHOICE unlike YOU.

  • Bury My Heart is "a life-altering approach to turning managers into unconditionally committed leaders." Check out slapcompany.

  • Almost all internet marketing consultants would agree, the absolute have to for All of businesses online is to initiate a local search marketing marketing campaign. Years ago, when we needed to locate a business, you opened up their trusty phone book. Now, yellow pages dont really have a place at home, other than maybe as a doorstopper.

  • So sad that his wife died from cancer. She was his inspiration. I remember him saying on Top Gear that he keeps coming up with new challenges for himself to keep himself occupied. He is totally inspiring.

  • Why should soccer players or golfing champions be revered and financially rewarded more than explorers who pushes themselves beyond normal limits of endurance (for whatever reason they like) - its still amazing achievement and they shouldn't have to go cap in hand to justify or explain. They are heroes. My only criticism is that all the team members should get the credit not just the chief.
