http://corruption.org.uk A Bo'ness couple who have been accused of fuelling the global production of the drug crystal meth have been released on bail after seven months in prison. Brian Howes and Kerry-Ann Shanks were arrested on 30th January at 9am at the request of the American law enforcement agencies. They were held in Falkirk police cells before being taken to Edinburgh's Sheriff Court on the afternoon of 31st January; they were never questioned, charged or even served with the warrant. Apparently they only had five minutes with a duty solicitor minutes before going into the court room where they were remanded. It took Brian my partner to starve himself for thirty days in protest before we were bailed, don't know if that was the reason for getting bail. However we have now read the extradition act and it states "If you're not well enough to face extradition proceedings they cannot continue". Brian had told me the day before that he was going to carry this protest on until the death. This morning a Scottish judge said they should be freed while their extradition case is dealt with.

Brian Howes and his partner Kerry Ann Shanks have spent 214 days in prison after the Americans requested their extradition.
Mr Howes has been on hunger strike for the last 30 of them - as these pictures from the time of his arrest show, his protest has taken its toll.
The Americans allege the couple supplied chemicals to illegal drugs labs in the states, where they were used to manufacture six million pounds worth of the deadly drug crystal meth. The US agencies have tabled more than 80 charges against them - and they could face massive jail sentences up to 98 years if they're convicted.
This morning a judge granted them bail as they continue to fight extradition. They will be reunited with their four children this evening - and will be back in court in March 10th and we are still fighting.

  • Why should the UK assist the US is their pointless drug war. The US are not the world's policemen but they think like they can act like it.

  • God help Gary McKinnon..

  • Can somebody help me here? How can these people be brought to the US if the chemicals they were selling were legal in the UK? And surely evidence must be shown before so many lives are affected. What happened to innocent until proven guilty hey people?

  • See you in Arizona Brian.

  • Brian was working with special branch and they have let him down.

  • How can you be put in jail for 7 months without charge? Thats crazy.

  • The US are crazy, The UK government do not protect our citizens. The Justice Minister should get involved for the families sake.

  • I am truly shocked at this and wish and hope that the government will come to your families rescue.
