review of Joy by Jean Patou. An amazing fragrance - close to perfect! :)

Released in 1930 and has never been reformulated since! That means its the exact same scent since 1930 and has never been changed!!! (Very rare)

  • I absolutely love Joy! My earliest memories of this perfume are the beautiful glass bottle sitting on my Mom's dressing table back in the early 80's. I couldn't stay out of it even then. This past week I picked up a small bottle of the EDP just for memories and ended up wearing it to work. Oh the Jasmine! It's so sweet and elegant--feminine, yes, but it doesn't stop me from being a bit of a Gender-Bender and wearing it myself...Beard and all. :)

  • @TheTfirebaugh Fantastic! I love hearing about all of the amazing memories this fragrance evokes :) It's a masterpiece - LOVE IT :)

  • Thanks!

I don't know what its tagline is nowadays, but for years Joy used to call itself

"The Costliest Perfume in the World"!

In fact, when it comes to the cost of ingredients, I think Chanel No 19 still takes the cake, owing mainly to the price of Italian iris.

    Thanks again, great piece.

  • @iedsri ah yes, its a beautiful scent. You can definitely tell high quality ingredients are used. :)

  • When I was five years old I drank a bottle of my grandmas Joy perfume. My grandma was pretty upset, and I dont remember it really, but my mom said I got pretty wild after that. I wish I could try drinking it again nowadays, or at least smell it.

  • God it's fantastic to see that young people like you have a real interest and passion for perfumes! Well done! Bravo!

  • Where can I buy this? i just checked ur site but I cant seem to find it

  • Absolute heaven on some. Not so great on me, but I wear it sometimes anyway.

  • Hi Cubbie!

I just got my bottle of vintage Joy (perfume) in the iconic black 7ml flacon. Paid $12.99 for it thinking it was empty but it wasn't, spilling about 2-3ml into the box & ruining it!

However, there is probably at leat 2 or so ml left in the bottle, and the roses and jasmine are really overpowering! Spilled a drop on my left hand and I'm timing it to see how long the parfum concentration lasts!

  • This is a very aristocratic scent, made to remind the ladies of the time the period before The Great Depression.I find that i can only pull it of at certain black tie events.Very feminine and sexy but not in "look at my cleavage "wayBy the way i'm 29...and i think i'll be able to really" own" this when i'll be in my 40ies.

A nice fact for you....Vivian Leigh wore this parfume,( she would use it to spray her sheets and bath water even as a mouth wash)and that says a lot.Good choice

  • great review! i seem to love aldehydic florals like no 5, joy... this one is gorgeous. i smelled it in Nordstrom's yesterday and felt swept away.... its so beautiful.

  • ok i got the perfume... I am so so sad, it looks exactly like the one in your hand. Something has to be wrong with it, Joy smells nothing like the hype of description of this legendary thing I've been dreaming of. Could it have been left out in the sun or something in transport to this chain store? Please let me know I just think it smells like 'white shoulders' just strong and powdery no flowers or happiness
