How long after the gilding is completed is this burnishing being undertaken. The surface sounds very hard.

The surface sounds harder than it really is but we are talking about wood of course. We usually burnish frames the next day but 4 or 5 hours should be long enough for most frames to dry. Using a fan can shorten the time.

why are the burnishing tools so heavily bandaged?

The masking tape gives better to grip and more stablity. After repeated use they would become lose if the tape were not used.

What is the finger held cutting tool you use to make smaller sections-while still in the book?

In Europe is is more traditional to have a bigger overlap between the leaves-that effectively leaves a good double gilded band viisible when distressed?-any comments?
