Burnishing 22k gold with agate burnishers. These are semi precious stones that bring out the luster in the gold. After burnishing the frame is ready for the finishing process.

  • How long after the gilding is completed is this burnishing being undertaken. The surface sounds very hard.

  • The surface sounds harder than it really is but we are talking about wood of course. We usually burnish frames the next day but 4 or 5 hours should be long enough for most frames to dry. Using a fan can shorten the time.

  • why are the burnishing tools so heavily bandaged?

  • The masking tape gives better to grip and more stablity. After repeated use they would become lose if the tape were not used.

  • What is the finger held cutting tool you use to make smaller sections-while still in the book?

In Europe is is more traditional to have a bigger overlap between the leaves-that effectively leaves a good double gilded band viisible when distressed?-any comments?
