The Katadyn Pocket water filter technology uses a 0.2 micron ceramic element impregnated with silver. The capacity of the Pocket micro filter is rated at 13,000 gallons (50,000 liters). The unit meets EPA purification standards for bacteria and protozoa including cysts, Giardia, Cyrptosporidia, Amoebae, Lamblia, E-coli, Salmonella, and Cholera.

The Katadyn Pocket filter could be used for expeditions, scouting troops, camping, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, or outdoor adventures including hunting and fishing. The filter could also be used in a disaster situation or emergency event. The Pocket filter is a simple design that can easily be cleaned in the field.

  • keep it in your inside jacket pocket-

  • I always pre-filter my pre-filter. Good advice.

  • Oh and coffee filters work as a pre filter.

  • This will not work for saltwater.

Options for saltwater are usually more expensive.

  • Great review. Final note about risk of cracking in sub zero very useful Thanks :)

  • what about salt water

  • why don't you try using a sunglass microfiber pouch to wrap around your prefilter

  • Can u use it for salt water like from the ocean?

  • Part 2 or 2 MSR also uses ceramic filters. I ended up getting a PUR Scout. Katadyn eventually bought PUR (sold the Scout as the Guide). PUR used iodine in one of the stages and claimed it killed viruses. I know of no filter that claims that now.

  • Part 1 or 2 First let me commend you on a very through review. I am going to date myself as you did in your John Wayne opener review. Back in 1998 when I lived in Idaho I was anxious about getting caught in the winter in the mountains. A family died less than 3 miles from a road the year before. One of the reasons I did not get Katadyn's Pocket for my emergency car kit was the ceramic filter. I believe some people in Alaska had had problems with ceramic filters cracking.
