First (and likely last) successful test of our homemade hybrid rocket motor. Oxidizer is gaseous oxygen, fuel in this one was an ABS plumbing pipe, with a bit of paraffin wax melted into the inside for ease of lighting. Still not happy with the throat diameter, going to go from 3/8" to 1/4" for the next nozzle, and make it solid 2" bar to help dissipate the heat. Made some serious progress compared to the first run!

    at this point, probably somewhere between 0 and 5lbs? We didnt really start developing any real thrust until vid #18 or so

  • And exactly how was the things set up in this experiment? Im kinda curious and wanna try making one of my own, though maybe not in as big a scale, but I kinda need some information before I can do anything :)

  • check out video 15.5, things in this one were similar to that. The main problems with this test were a lack of a proper seal around the nozzle (we later startet using o-rings instead of silicone) and a steel nozzle instead of graphite, couldnt take the heat.

  • What material did you use for the nozzle? Im curious as to why it melted so quickly even with low oxidizer flow...

  • the first nozzles were all cold rolled solid steel bar. We found that if there is ANY kind of leak, and the gasses are allowed to exit in any location anywhere other than through the throat of the nozzle, it will cut right through like an oxy-acetelene torch and melt down everything around it. The preliminary tests of our cement nozzles are looking good, just have to perfect our casting methods.

  • with that kind of heat try casting a ceramic nozzle or use cast iron like cast iron pipe gas pipe stainless mite handle the heat its used on turbines but much harder to work with and weld,
