this is really nice! i would like to try it out with my students as well.
will there be any other replacements for alka-seltzer? i'm not sure if we can find it here in malaysia

@kymtheshortypants Hello Kym. Sorry for replying late. You can change the antacid pills with any pills that will turn fizzy if you drop them into water. If you have calcium Redoxon (supplement vit C) it will work :) but the color might turn orangy.

@camille123345 When u drop the pill, its ingredients make a chemical reaction.
C6H8O7(aq) + 3NaHCO3(aq) → 3H2O(l) + 3CO2(g) + Na3C6H5O7(aq)
citric acid + baking soda → water + carbon dioxide + sodium citrate
The pills falls onto the water area, so the carbon dioxide (gas) was formed inside the water, producing water bubbles. Since gas is lighter than liquid, the carbon dioxide (covered in water bubble) pushes its way up, passing through the oil part-- making it look like lava lamp.
