Wildland Firefighters rappelling out of a Bell 212 HP at 225 ft. This is a "rappel proficiency" or practice rappel at the Livingston Airport in Montana. During an operational rappel these firefighters descend through heavy timber at heights up to 250 ft. to access forest fires quickly.

  • That looks like a Bell 412....Correct me if I'm wrong. Does it have 4 blades or 2?

  • @Dlstevens1977 Two Blades

  • Andy looks like a rockstar at the end!!

  • Andy always looks like a rockstar

  • Cool video. Can you tell me what is the name of that rappel device. Looks like miniature figure eight but what is that tube under it? Somekind of safety brake?

  • The rappel device is called a Sky Genie. Within the tube you see is a cast aluminum bar, the rope enters the top of the tube and wraps 2.5 times around the bar before exiting the bottom. The two rings you see, which gives it the figure eight look, are used for attaching to the harness and as a means of "locking off." Even with the extremes of heat generated during a rappel this device design allows for a good service life.

  • @hark123456 Fox Valley Technical College. I wouldn't recommend going there though. There's one instructor for all of the fire classes and the guy is a total douche, with an ego so high that I'm afraid it will collide with the ISS.

  • @OneSkiWonder where did you get that?

  • @beertooths I've got an associates degree in wildland firefighting. Is there anything else I should have to get on a rappel crew like this?

  • What certifications, or requirements do you need to become a rappeller? Training must be hardcore.

  • that looks so fun!

  • wow the rig on thr bird is different from ours here in alberta

  • I wish we had a rappel school up in Alaska. I don't have any aspirations to be a smokejumper but rappelling is something that interests me. Maybe I will just have to go down to the lower 48 and get some certs.

  • Its a bell 212. Kachina Aviation ship. I work on a Bell 205 super plus plus.

  • what does it take to be rap attack

  • Didn't they stop doing this?
