It was No. 1 vs No. 2. The two undefeateds in District 13-4A were squaring off not just to decide who had the inside track for a District Championship, but it was a bragging rights war. The 2009 contest between Longview and Marshall marked the 100th year anniversary of the two rivals. A rivalry that rolls all the way back to their 0-0 tie at Brown Park in Marshall in the fall of 1909. With the 99th meeting being at Lobo Stadium, the district championship showdown took off. The last time Longview had been ranked so high in the polls with the Mavericks coming to Lobo Stadium was in 1998, where the Mavs pulled off the upset in double overtime to beat the Lobos 35-28.
This season, however, Longview was riding an 8 game winning streak over Marshall. And much like those previous 8 contests, turnovers were a huge factor in the game. To start the second half, the Mavericks hit off 5 straight turnovers and fell way behind to the Lobos, a deficit they wouldn't be able to overcome.
Longview knocks off Marshall, 47-30, for their 9th straight win against their arch rival. Longview also increased their home winning streak to 29 games and their consecutive district winning streak to 32.
