@Drew6187 Bull elephants actually tend to be solitary by nature, only occasionally forming small bachelor herds of 3-4 individuals at the most. More likely it was the bull that left his mother. What actually astonished me is that the bull didn't hurt the calf, since most other animals would have done this to unfamiliar infants, even of their own kind (white rhinos, hippos, lions, brown bears, Komodo dragons, etc). But I guess there's no way to really understand the elephant's mind.

@NavyDogfish I think he saved it because he didn't have a herd of his own. And he was probably abandoned by his mother also. He saved it because he needed elephants in his herd.

@ihaterobbie123 Why is animal favouritsm pathetic? We all know that the dog is "man's best friend" and rightly so I'd feel more connected to a pet dog than a pet turtle, personally and don't forget before cars, horses were the best transport you could possibly have, naturally people grew incredibly fond of horses when compared to cockroaches or spiders.
Animal favouritism is far from pathetic. Do you see every single organism as equal to a horse? That's stupid in all honesty

Little Foot's father to the rescue!
Wow. The intelligence of these behemoths is amazing. I've heard of elephants helping people without being asked, using tools with no training and even visiting loved ones' graves, but this is something else. That bull elephant either had bad memories involving lions or it really intended to help the child of his own kind, despite the fact that it probably wasn't his. That just shows how truly complex and convoluted the mind of an elephant really is.

@jgq85 Absolutely right... I have no idea why the lion is mentioned as the king of jungle. Elephant only deserves to be the King...
