Goldcorp's Red Lake mine, in northern Ontario, located 14 hours north of the
nearest major city had integrated two separate mining operations and was
consolidating its data centres. It needed to quickly deploy a data center, but was
struggling with how to implement a solution in a remote location that was also cost
efficient. To complicate matters, there was also a good chance that the company
would eventually need to mine underneath the proposed data center site.
The company implemented a 400-square-foot SMDC beginning with one row of
eight racks, with the extra ability to add another row of eight racks. The decision
to go with the SMDC solution was driven by its cost-effective and space-efficient
design, its flexibility and low-maintenance features, as well as its ability to be
deployed within a few months.
The new data center is designed to be relocated quickly and easily. Moreover,
Goldcorp expects to save 15 percent of the cost of building a traditional data
center—simply by avoiding the expense of building a raised floor.
