Howdy,
I have openings on both top and bottom to provide increased ventilation but also to allow the bees to exit from the top...they do go out from the top a lot with the top exits.
I like having this top inner board with to top holes on the side and a ventilation hole in the centre of the cover with a screen over the top of the three inch hole.
It works for me.
