The Frugal Gourmet, aired by WTTW Chicago, was one of many cooking shows that I watched in the mid 80's. I recall thinking that Jeff Smith was pretty hilarious when I was a kid. Check out this classic clip.
I knew the Dunkards to be called Drunkards. I am half Pennsy Dutch and they come in many types. I returned to Alsace and now live in France, back to my roots via Ohio and then NYC! "Schmeck" means tastes good and is the origin of the slang for heroin = smack! I am very tenacious and people do not understand my patience. 7 weets/sours was an American update -- they were too poor in Europe. Jeff was sometimes very drunk but this was a good series.
Sir(s): Thank you so much for this Discussion of this Fine American Cuisine with the Corresponding Recipes, Historical Reference, and State of Mind. I see no conflict of any kind coming from such People from ANY GERMAN LANDS, per se. Here, in My Municipality of SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, I always attempt to "think like," perhaps "look like," those known as, namely, "Die Lateiner." Furthermore, often taken for granted and overlooked, "Good People assemble Good Things Upon their Good Old Roads."--J.D.
