  • The only person who really understand this piece was Emil Gilels. Listen with him...but here is good also.

  • @Schumiszt Obviously, you do not have perfect pitch, and/or you do not have a trained ear. Horowitz's performance is not only the clearest and cleanest, but it is the most musical and sensitive performance of this toccata ever. All others pale in comparison.

  • @veloqis let yuja have a go at it...

  • No one could beat Horowitz when he was in his prime. And no one plays this piece better than Horowitz.

  • Ah, I love the melody and the unmistakable Horowitzian touch.

  • this is so full of life

  • Wow, he stretches and shapes the dynamics like no other (see his Prokofiev toccata for another hair-raiser)

But I also like the sly touch at 1:33, where he syncopates the rhythm- that odd beat makes it sound totally different!

  • D'ya think Schumann had issues with Clara; this SOB is a bitch to play; the more I hear it, the more I think Horowitz is as good in his own way as Pogorelich, and Richter is as good in his own way as Kissin, or Cziffra. It's a graduation exercise to prove you're a pro.

  • What parts are "too messy?"

Have you heard Josef Lhevinne play this?

  • This is a major work of modern pianoplay introduced by Schumann Chopin and Liszt. When you play this you are forced to play it with a special technique and not otherwise as its only possible in one way to do it. Any serious pianist has to work on it even with small hands as it gives you an important understanding how to use your wrist and arms.

Horowitz version is the most outstanding one ever recorded...
