You're both right. this is Willie P Bennett's version of the classic tale of Diamond Joe. Willie P was a great Canadian songwriter.

The tune and a few lines are based on the old cowboy songs Diamond Joe which was recorded by Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston, Rambling Jack Elliot, and Bob Dylan. No disrespect intended but the original song will remain in memory.

The name of the song is "Willie’s Diamond Joe". It's on Matt's new CD "Coal Ming Blues"
