In case you didn't know, it was the law in Germany during WWII to forcibly admit young German teens into the Hitler Youth, whether they wanted to enter or not. About 80-90% of German teens were in the Hitler Youth by the end of the war; you were lucky if you didn't get forced into it.
The pope, in his youth, detested the Nazis, and refused to attend the meetings. His father was an anti-Nazi, and the pope's cousin was killed by the Nazis during their experiments on the mentally disadvantaged.
