The Papin Sisters: Murder and Madness

"Tribute" doesn't necessarily connote sympathy or positivity. There are no excuses for their actions, and that's the point; hence the case's psychoanalytical importance. To feign understanding of human behavior, to condemn, to judge, is irrelevant, because it simply does not help. They deserve punishment, but to say they are monsters is just dismissing the problem: why, not how. Furthermore, you cannot compare any situation to another situation; people are not mathematical progressions.

The flabby Lancelin women didn't stand a chance against the strong Papin Sisters whom were forced to work grueling 14 hour days/6 days a week/ year in/year out. Hope she got the chance to tell old Mrs Lancelin where to stick her white glove test.

@PlushHoney Thank you for your sensitive reply there. Many people see the word "murder" and immediately saddle the perpetrator(s) with the word "EVIL". I too am fascinated by the Papin Sisters' story. Why did the Lancelin women return to the family home when they were supposed to be elsewhere? What were they hoping to find?
Lovely video too :)

The Papin sisters' story is one of those that make me think afterwards. I think these "tributes" that you made are great, not only because of the music (which, by the way, led me to your videos), but because you show the human side of them, not only the criminals that they became. Yes, they committed a terrible crime, but they were human beings after all, and I think we should try to understand why these things happen. Of course not justify their behaviour, but neither turnnig our backs on them.

Why the implication that the Papin sisters were insane.
The Lancelin women had it coming to them. They were vicious exploiters of the worst kind and got their just desserts. How could you force another human being to work 7 days a week, 14 hours a day and not expect retaliatory violence?

Why "tribute" - Another "treatment" would have been more appropriate.

Well, it is a tribute to the sisters because I feel very affected by their story and quite sad for them. They had a terrible, tragic life- the murder would probably never have happened if Christine had not been very mentally ill and under terrible stress about her unhappy life. It was not a black and white case.

Christine was sentenced to death by the guillotine, which was later commuted to life hard labour in prison. She died of self-inflicted starvation in a mental asylum in 1937. Léa was sentenced to 10 years hard labour and after her release in 1943 she continued to live alone and work as a maid until old age. She died in 2001. Hope that answers your question, OTMAfan!
