JAWS Challenge:
About:
This is designed by me to give people a chance to use the computer with their keyboard and ears, rather than their mouse and eyes. This is meant to be fun & an experience in accessing your computer if you didn't have enough vision to adequately see the screen. Another idea is if you work at your computer all day, and you get eye strain, you can turn on JAWS and turn off your monitor. Below are the instructions & rules for utilizing the JAWS challenge.
Instructions:
1. Go to ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj /privat/WebFiles/JAWS/J10.0.512.exe If this does NOT work, go to www.freedomscientific.com, click on Products, then click on JAWS for Windows. There's a link on the page, to the right of the column that talks about Unmatched Braille Support for Windows, that says "Get a FREE Demo of JAWS (71 MB FTP Download)". A file will come up entitled "J10.0.512.exe". Proceed then to step 2.
2. Run this file & install JAWS for Windows Version 10. The talking install & audio progress indicators are normal. When asked to, activate the Restart button. DO NOT do this with the Mouse! Instead, press TAB until you hear "Restart Button", then press Space.
3. If JAWS comes up automatically, proceed to Step 4. Otherwise, perform Step 3 (this step): Press and HOLD the Windows key, and press R. This will bring up the Windows Run Dialog. Type in "jaws10" and press Enter. This will start up JAWS.
4. A dialog will appear, asking you to activate JAWS. Tab until you hear two items. One is a checkbox that, when checked by pressing the Space bar, will signal JAWS to no longer display the activation dialog. The second item is a button labeled "Run in Demo Mode." Press Space once you hear that button in order to activate it. This will initiate the 40 minute demo.
5. You are now up & running with JAWS for Windows. Here are some hints:
Insert+T tells you the title of the open application, or the window within the application. Tab & Shift+Tab are your main navigation keystrokes. Alt+Tab switches between open applications. Control+Tab switches between tabs in dialog boxes. Insert+1 is Keyboard Help. F1 is JAWS help. Or alternatively, you can Alt+Tab to JAWS, press Alt to open the menu, arrow left or right to Help and press down arrow on that, then press Enter on JAWS Help.
For additional JAWS help tailored at those who do not wish to navigate the built-in JAWS help system, visit:

Conditions:
1. You can NOT use your mouse or touch pad. You can NOT use your eyes. Thus, you must unplug your mouse & monitor. Wear a blindfold if you need to.
2. Turning on your monitor, plugging in your mouse, or removing your blindfold, are considered CHEATING!
3. HAVE FUN!
hi jaw, I've just bought a laptop about 2 weeks ago. Since I found it not so comfortable using the built in mouse pad, I plugged a USB mouse. But when I unplug my mouse, the mouse pad is dead. Any idea on how to fix it? Can you tell me why this happened?

This is only a guess, but I think the touch pad has been disabled. Check to see if there's a button in the area that you can press & re-enable it. It should be near the touch pad itself.

You might want to consider updating the first link to reflect the fact that JAWS 11.0 is now out.

For some reason I'm thinking I'd have to redo the whole video then, because I read that business verbatim. LOL

Just wondering. Anyone know how good JAWS is with Windows 7?

I've tried it. It works pretty well, just remember to use INS+F10 to get the open programs dialog, otherwise you won't know what's running.
