A plate stack that ran for 6 hours in 1/2 gallon distilled water and 1/8 teaspoon table salt.
salt water doesn't seem to work well in the long term.
People, don't do this at home!!!

  • I have been doing more studies and i found that POH seems to work slightly better for internal combustion engines.

the resson being is that potasium burns and it helps rather than hinders the combustion prosess. SOH introduces small amount of sodium into the motor and COH adds calcium buildups.

  • No mistake. it is also known as "Hydrated Lime". it is used for outhouses to dissolve the "waste" in them. Calcium hydroxide (also known as COH) works with an HHO system with little unwanted gas, but you need to use a lot of it compared to SOH or POH. the nice thing is that COH is not as dangerous to handle as POH or SOH so it's up to you what you want to use.

  • These were 310 grade stainless steel plates , i don't normaly use salt, this was only a example to show people what salt does after long term use. I Use calcium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide with pure distiled water.

  • oh man, that's harsh, i hope they come clean, thanks for the info :)

  • Hydrated lime, Like I have a ton of out in the shed for gardening? SWEET! I hear that baking soda gives off carbon monoxide, salt give lovely chlorine gas. any idea what the hydrated lime gives off? any idea what Graphite electrodes might do? I'm just puttering around with real low tech stuff for now. thanks for the tutorial

  • Is the mention of Calcium Hydroxide a mistake?

I hadn't heard of Calcium Hydroxide as a possible electrolyte before now.

  • Try Lemon Juice, it seems to work fine, have been running for 5 hours so fare and no difference in amps, same production, and totally clear!

    1 Lemon to 2.5lt, I'm testing with 12v, 4amp. Bubbler is still the same with only a 4 plate cell [ + - + - ].

Search for "Lemon Juice HHO" here to see some guys who have done a 40 hour run.

  • Where the plates Stainless Steel (stupid question), and how did you get on with other electrolytes?

I have been using salt for quick testing as it's a very good electrolyte, but the brown crud on the top stops the bubbles from popping; Ends up like a chocolate milkshake!
