My Old Truck

This is not a once upon a time story. But in truth there was a time when all of this did happen once. I'll begin at the beginning since the beginning is the best place to begin.
I like to play music, and as far back as I can remember since living in the southern most community in the United States of America there has been an informal gathering of musicians built around a core nucleus of friends where anyone is welcome to sit in and jam. Many players have come and gone over the years but the nucleus has remained constant.
One night in January of 08 I was sitting in with the boys and we were all having a good fun time of it. We finished a set (the obligatory blues jam warm up, a Beatles cover, some Tom Petty and a few originals of the keyboardist that he likes to play). Then everyone adjourns to the lower driveway to sit around and talk story while tipping a few and puffin'. This evening one of the fellows decides he has had enough and excuses himself early citing heavy work load in the AM. As he is backing his truck up the drive into the shadows of the night we continue our banter until we hear a horrendous crash up the hill. Silence... everyone looks at one another. Definite impact. Someone's vehicle has been violated. So we all walk up the hill to see who the unlucky recipient is. Of course it had to be me 'cause this story is about my old truck. It was not a pretty sight sad to say. But the fellow who did the crashing was most apologetic and offered to have the damage repaired right away. With a little effort we are able to pull the fender out so it doesn't rub the tire. I, not wishing to make trouble for a friend, just agree to exchange phone #'s with him and let it go for the evening. We return to our music and the D.B. drives off into the darkness. Days turn into weeks and then into months. All the while I, in the mean time am forced to drive this crumpled wreck up into town in order to check my mail and replenish supplies such as bread and milk. This of course encourages smirks and smiles from all of my friends and neighbors as well as the occasional raised eyebrow from the local constabulary.
As the days pass into weeks I have the responsibility to help organize the reception for my hanai son's nuptials. As a part of this event we plan to have a large barbecue at my friend Keala's home. I, naturally being the kiaweking, am asked to supply the wood for the barbecue. So I load up the back of the truck with kiawe wood and start out for Keala's house.
I don't get five miles before I hear a loud POP. Due to the fact I was distracted and not paying attention. I didn't notice my gauges and the truck over heated (ouch) the radiator hose split a seam leaving me stranded by the Hilea bridge. Ah, but fortunately with modern technology I have a cell phone (mobile) so I phone the boys and tell then if they want to BBQ they better hustle right on over and pick me and the wood up. At this stage the old truck is left abandoned on the side of the highway until after the wedding the following day.
One night after a long day of work I fell into a deep sleep. I awoke from my sleep at exactly 12:45 am. I had an idea for the lyric to a song about my old truck. I thought "I'd better write this down or I'll forget it by the morning. So I jump out of bed and over to my desk and begin to write. As I am writing I think of more lyrics, one after another they just come right along. In ten minutes time I have penned the entire song. Quite satisfied with myself I go back to bed. I am asleep before my head hits the pillow.

This one is for my Irish friends Grainne & Adrian

My Old Truck
..................
Wouldn't you know, it'd just be my luck.
A drunken buffoon has smashed into my truck
The side view mirror it was fatally cracked.
The bumper's now held on by duct tape, in fact
The passenger door is sealed shut with a crease
and when I'm driving through town the local police
roll their eyes back and shake their heads with a frown
for the front wheel is bent and it just wobbles around.
What did I do to deserve such a plight?
I'm a saintly type sinner and it just doesn't seem right.
And just when I thought it was all a bad dream,
With a POP my radiator hose blows a seam.
I think to myself if this gets any worse
I might call on the gypsy to help me end this curse.
Then I read in the news that gas prices are hiked,
I just throw up my hands and think I'll just ride a bike.
A bike it would seem now that's the perfect solution.
It will keep me in shape and it won't cause pollution.
The best reason, I think, for those that compare them,
is now I don't line the pockets of all those greedy oil barons-Ha Ha Ha
&
That's my story-and I'm stickin' to it
