My name is Andrew Tibbetts, I am 15 years old, a Life Scout and a Leukemia survivor. My dad and I are coordinating the first of its kind Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day, in Raleigh, NC. As part of the day I will be working on my Eagle Scout project, I will be collecting personal items for what I call the Be Prepared Bag. These bags will contain personal items and small gifts that will get a family through their first few days in the hospital. I will be organizing drives throughout the community over the next few months to collect these items. These drives will conclude at my Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day on February 14, 2009, 9:00AM—4:00PM. I want to bring awareness to pediatric cancers as well as give back to the community who have helped me get through my treatments.
This is a great opportunity for your organization to get some great community service hours and help hundreds of families at the same time.
The Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day will be held at Leesville High School, it will include a blood drive, a bone marrow drive and platelet recruitment. There will be a number of local and national pediatric cancer charities present to hand out information about their organizations. The event is free, but I do ask that all attendees bring a item to donate. These items will be put into my Be Prepared Bags for the UNC Childrens Hospital, for families admitted with Cancer related issues.
