Zipangu
Claude Vivier
(1980)
....For 13 strings....
Vivier states: "In this work I am exploring the different aspects of 'colour' surrounding a melody. I tried to make my harmonic structures opaque, by using various bowing techniques. Thus I have used a coloured, swishy kind of sound, obtained by exerting great pressure on the strings, in contrast with pure harmonics, achieved by normal bowing. A melody changes in colour (chords), becomes lighter, and returns step by step, as it were purified and lonely."

  • I listen to Q2, one of WNYC's 4 internet radio choices, and first heard Vivier there. As a total beginner, I could listen to his stuff all day long. Saturday morning 5 March 2011

  • @chuckbeattyo I could listen to Claude all they live-long day as-well ;)

  • Beautiful post-modern music

  • Thanks for introducing Claude Vivier and this fine piece of music to me. Great orchestration/sonority, and an emergent stucture, lika a story.

  • Quite a force of nature coming from 13 little wooden boxes. There is that eastern touch too.
