Okay. I can't even front. I thought this song was done by some 'round the way Philly black group. I am surprised, and mean no harm by my words. I just had a picture in my mind of what the group looked like. Regardless, I love the song, the group, the lead and background vocals. This is a great song! Forgive if by any slight chance I offended anyone. It is not my intention for sure.

No offense taken. The Jaggerz were labeled The White Knights With The Brown Sound back in the 60s when they started. Groups they covered at that time would come see them because no one could believe they were white guys. James Brown even came to one of their shows for one song. My dad (featured on lead in this video) would end their live shows with It's A Man's World. Their first album was with Gamble & Huff from Philly called Introducing The Jaggerz. It purposely didnt have their image.

They didn't want anyone knowing they were white. They were bad man. They beat the O'Jays for a Summer gig at a place called The Cove in Geneva On The Lake (Ohio) back in 1964. Look up We Went To Different Schools Together, their 2nd album. It had their only recognized hit The Rapper. But the whole album is crazy. 'Memoirs Of The Traveler' has been sampled by The Game, Dilated Peoples, Whiz Kalifah, Currency, etc. Oh Missy Elliot sampled The Rapper a fews years back too.

This gives no justice to Billys voice!! He was incredible, brought the house down on most of his renditions!! Bill came with my band (the east coast band ) in the 90's, he wrote and sang lead on a Myrtle beach shag song called "shaggin usa" search on you tube! the jaggerz were phenomenal, their layered voices & exact duplication of the backround vocals were their key!! Bennie was a key to with his high blending falsetto!! what a group!!! I played at geneva opposite them in 1968.Miss u Billy!!!

NBFLASH - Your dad sure sang this song for filth! (a compliment) It has always been one of my favorite songs. I hadn't thought about for a while and randomly came across an article that mentioned the group, and I searched for it. Now I have to check out more of their music!

Very much like the story of Motown's Rare Earth...the White band whose singing & playing sounded so Black that their records charted on the Black Soul charts before the did on the White Pop charts.

I thought the same thing of the Jaggerz when I heard their gem "The Rapper" Back In The Day...

Better late than never! This is a great clip and great song! Interesting to see Billy Maybray as a frontman and Donnie Iris "playing" trumpet!

Also interesting to see what short hair they had for that late date and such freaky outfits. Like the white version of Psychedelic Shack-era Temps.
