Lissa Rankin, MD is an OB/GYN physician, author, keynote speaker, consultant to health care visionaries, professional artist, and founder of the women's health and wellness community OwningPink.com. Discouraged by the broken, patriarchal health care system, she left her medical practice in 2007 only to realize that you can quit your job, but you can't quit your calling. This epiphany launched her on a journey of discovery that led her to become a leader in the field of mind/body medicine, which she blogs about at OwningPink.com and is writing about in her third book Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof You Can Heal Yourself (Hay House, 2013).

She teaches both patients and health care professionals how to make the body ripe for miracles by healing the mind and being healthy in all aspects of life, not just by promoting healthy behaviors like good nutrition, exercise, and adequate sleep, but by encouraging health and authenticity in relationships, work, creative expression, spirituality, sexuality, finances, and living environment. She is leading a revolution to feminize how health care is received and delivered by encouraging collaboration, fostering self-healing, reconnecting health care and spirituality, empowering patients to tap into the mind's power to heal the body, and encouraging women not to settle for being merely well, but to strive for living vital, joyful, authentic lives full of "mojo."

When not spreading the word, she chills out, paints, does yoga, and hikes in Marin County, CA with her husband and daughter.

I just love her. She speaks to me. So many people give their power away to professionals, when it is us who holds the true power. I see this very thing in my best friend - she has brain cancer and was told 4 weeks ago that she had 2-3 weeks to live. She bought it and is not fighting. She still has a choice and it's so hard to watch.

in contrast then, are you proposing that psychological issues such as stress, depression and the like, bear no physical consequences on one's general health? mental health aside of course..

I like this talk, I think it is great, but I also think that part of it suggests that if you are unhealthy that there is something that is wrong fundamentally. Sometimes healthy happy people get ill...if one can't think of personal examples then look at the Randy Pausch last lecture as an example. Though I do think this has some important fundamentals, particularly relating to US society.

Some comments here are kinda disconnected...

I think she made perfect sense...the body communicates to us through symptoms, that are mere reflections of what is going on mentally, emotionally and Spiritually...And it does mean balancing and looking within...

I've experienced this myself, and seen it in others even when can't seem to see it in themselves...

This is awful, and more of the new age nonsense. Why does she need to use the word 'spirituality' so much? What does that mean to her exactly?

She even states that drugs and surgery are the 'jump start' to recovery, which is right, but the changes afterwards are more likely diet and environment, not looking inwards for an inner light that has no data to back it up.

Of course, it wasn't a surprise to hear her mention her new book being for sale...

You're correct, but I wasn't talking about stress. The critique I made was of the idea that positive thinking will significantly improve disease outcomes. I did NOT deny the reality of stress. The problem is that millions succumb to illnesses like cancer despite being positive. Research actually suggests that positive thinking is NOT a reliable predictor of disease outcomes, despite our intuition telling us otherwise. Here's an example: ncbi . nlm . nih . gov / pubmed / 10695978

Remember she is on her own journey. You can't live for her. Forgive her decision and love her as she is right now. Accept her fully and be there for her. Love yourself for where you are on your journey, there is no right and wrong. Take care. I wish you lots of love and peace during this difficult time x
