We decided to xeriscape the side yard along the sidewalk rather than having to mow it. After cultivating the soil and removing as much grass as possible we added mulch to the bed. A special blend of drought tolerant flowers picked for the Southeast was purchased from www.americanmeadows.com .
The first year we had plenty of annual flowers blooming while the perennials had time to mature.

After the daisies and Sweet William bloom they are followed by blanket flowers, sunflowers and Black Eyed Susans. As these plants have established themselves it is no longer necessary to water these flower beds.
