NEW BERLIN, Wis. -- Betsy Kippers and Carol Krogmann speak during the New Berlin School Board's public comment portion of its meeting Monday, Aug. 29, 2011.
In a setting that looked more like a professional wrestling match, both sides of the new collective bargaining law were at the New Berlin School Board meeting to protest and support policies in a new employee handbook approved unanimously Monday.
Wisconsin Education Association Council, New Berlin Education Association members and other district staff were upset about reductions in sick days, early retirement benefits, and disability benefits in the handbook. Teachers are opposed to increases in working hours and not being able to grieve suspensions, written reprimands and negative performance evaluations.
