@Wlmitch1 i thought at first it might be a Texas Rat, but then i saw where this was Kentucky. ;) i'm in Virginia and don't think i've ever heard Black Rat Snakes called cow snakes. i think some people may say that for Milk Snakes, though. around here people just call the Black Rats Black Snakes, Pilot Snakes, Pilot Black Snakes, etc. unfortunately, alot of people kill them when they're small because they think they're little rattlers or Copperheads :(

It looks like either a Black Rat Snake/Gray Rat Snake intergrade or a dark Gray Rat Snake. It seems quite docile compared to most of them. They usually vibrate their tails, rear up, and strike with a sharp open-mouthed catlike hiss, instead of burying their heads in their coils like this one did.
