My great grandfather, who emigrated from Denmark, on his homestead in South Dakota, about 1926. The footage was taken by his son, the painter Jes Schlaikjer. Includes scene of Mt Rushmore under construction.

  • Wonderful film. The good old days with free-roaming chicken. Love that kid who didn't want to be in the picture. Maybe Erich can buy some acres somewhere and contemplate becoming a gentleman farmer.

  • Thanks. We have free-roaming chickens in our back yard now! Walking barefoot on our lawn is not a wise idea. The fresh eggs are good for a proper mayonnaise, though.

  • My great grandfather used a water pump similar to your's at :45 seconds. We still have it to this day, and it will eventually run again. The fuel tank, and water tank were filled at start up, and were designed to run out at the same time so it would never overheat. Your folks definitely had all of the latest technology! The shots of Rushmore are historic, and the kiss at the very end is very touching! thanks for posting!

  • Hello Erich! This is an amazing compilation of family footage. Your great grandfather has the likeness of someone who is now on the face of Mount Rushmore...Teddy Roosevelt! Thanks for this wonderful contribution to YouTube!
