I like to think of it as being a system of equations problem. You get x=5.12121212 so 100x= 512.121212 so when you subtract it works out nicely and you get 507=99x so 507/99. Exactly what you did, but this is how my professor always explained it as being. Pretty much the same process and the same results though.
