@jsnprofessor Yes because a backlit keyboard in combination with a light sensor does not use too much battery.
That is also what we see in the current generation, a backlit keyboard would have been possible without any issues, Apple only wanted to give you a reason to get the new one.

@JAMO1013 Not the 2010 version that you see in this video.
Apple added the backlit keyboard 2011.
