Recorded on a Friday night in the kitchen at Salthill Palace. Dan Burke on the Deering Calico tenor banjo accompanied by Steven Johnston on the guitar. The tunes are "The Black Frog" and "The Sanctuary" learned from Enda Scahill's essential "Pick It Up" album.

  • Sounds great! And I just ordered a new Calico from Eagle Music...can't wait!

  • Money well spent. You will love it. Eagle in England. Thats where mine came from. Are u not in the US?

  • Is that a Deering Calico tenor? If so, I'm curious as to how you got a darker tone out of it than I've heard from them before?

  • It is indeed. Not sure really. It is just a standard set up with medium gauge phospher bronze strings. It must just be the way I play - perhaps a little further off the bridge than most?

    Nice playing, thanks lads.

The dark sound could be because the head has not been tightened in a long time, and may have relaxed a bit ??

  • Excellent. Thank you.

  • No, I AM in US (RI) but most ironically, the cheapest place to buy the banjo was not here, but there! I actually called Deering and they gave me an explanation which basically stated they keep the retail price and allow merchants to set their own price. As Eagle is a reputable company and sets the banjos up for Irish tenor I'm happy. Not too many Irish tenor players on our side of the pond as on yours! As a result, tons of five string banjos but hard to track down a four string Calico!

  • The banjo's in standard GDAE and the guitars in DADGAD.

I will take pleasure in knowing the tuning then , as it sounds different from mine. :)
