Olympic torch makes stop in San Francisco

Hello on this Tuesday, April 8, 2008. I'm Rebecca Field in for Kristin Volk with today's UPI top news update.

The Olympic torch is now in the U.S. The flame arrived in San Francisco early this morning and taken to an undisclosed location. High security measures are being taken following protests over China's human rights records. A leg of the torch's journey in Paris was canceled yesterday because of demonstrations. Protesters also posted signs on the Golden Gate bridge in preparation for today's stop. They're expressing concern over China's policies towards Tibet and Sudan.

The top U.S. General in Iraq is in the hot seat on Capital Hill today. General David Petraeus and the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Croker are giving the latest Iraq War status report to lawmakers today. Earlier this morning Petraeus said troop levels should return to "pre-surge levels" if the situation is stable. He added while there's been progress in Iraq, recent violence shows the situation is "fragile." All 3 White house contenders; John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will have a shance to ask them questions later today.

Four more U.S. soldiers are dead following more violence in Baghdad. Today is the third day of intense fighting between troops and Shiite followers of Cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. According to the cleric's website, he has cancelled a demonstration set to take place in the capital today. Officials say about 36 people died and nearly 140 were injured in the violence on Sunday and Monday. The tension first started weeks ago when Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki launched a ground offensive in Basra...prompting fighting between Iraqi security forces and Sadr followers.

President Bush welcomed Louisiana State University's football team to the White House yesterday. The president honored the National football champs at a ceremony on the South Lawn yesterday. He spoke of the teams' success and recognized specific players like quarterback Matt Flyn and defensive tackle Glen Dorsey. In return, players honored Bush with a personalized jersey.
