The city of Canterbury, or as the Romans called it -- Durovernum Cantiacorum, lies in Kent in the southeast region of England. Pope Gregory the Great sent Augustine to the area in 597 A.D. to convert the heathen English, and after asking permission of King Athelbert of Kent, Augustine built his priory on the present cathedral grounds. Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered in the building in 1170. The cathedral has grown massive over the years and is now the oldest church in England that's still in use. The city is charming, with great shopping and tremendous history and heritage, and it's a lot more fun than it was when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote "The Canterbury Tales" in 1387.

  • Did you know in roman times ships could sail right up to canterbury , the stour was much wider back then thanks to the wantsum channel that cut of Thanet from the mainland , this was still the case up to about the 17th century but eventualy the wantsum channel that connects to the stour siltted up.

  • Neat info! Thanks for adding it.

    Cheers, John

  • i'm gonna go to the city for college!!!!!<3

  • it is remarkable!! the ancient structures emanate atmosphere!! it would be even more wonderful if the people, not only here, but in many other places, were more attentive to their dress.... the slovenly appearance of modern-day citizens is really depressing to have to look at!! Try to smarten it up a bit people!!
