you're right, it does keep plenty of storage space for itself. cnet used the example of having two 500 gig hds and a 250 gig. they said the usable capacity is about 750 gigs... because if your 250 fails, you've got plenty of space on both 500s. but if one of your 500s fails, you need at least another 500 backup. so if you have two 500s and a 250 and BOTH 500s fail, then you lose data. there's no redundancy issue because there's enough space allocated based on your largest hard drive.

it sounds like you have to keep 1 drive empty out of 3 full in case one breaks up so Drobo fills the empty one. Or did I misunderstood that? Also if the data goes randomly on any of the 4 drives, what about I want to retrieve one to put in a computer expecting to find precise data ? I'm confused...

i've heard the transfer speeds are not that fast.. what are your speeds on the interfaces?

i searched on the web but i dont know if it recognizes APC UPS'es with usb interface.. cause what happens at multiple instand power off's ??
