As far as domination by Peugeot/Citroen I think that 8 WRC titles in a row count for domination in my book. Audis? Nowhere to be seen and they are still living off that halo effect of winning in the 80s, but VW are on the way back which is good to see and to be encouraged.

All I am saying is that it suited certain manufacturers to drive the banning process as they were no longer winning; better for them to leave on a winning perception rather than wait until Lancia and Peugeot gained the Marketing high ground which they would have done as they had the better cars. The Quattro was no longer as competitive and in truth only excelled while every other manufacturer ran two wheel drive cars.

I agree that the overriding reason given for the banning of Group B cars was the death of Henri Toivonen; I was and still am a huge fan so I am well aware and was gutted at his death; he certainly wouldn’t have wanted Group B banned
Brave drivers have been killed in horrific accidents before without wholesale banning of certain categories of rallying/track racing etc.

Politics from inside FISA is driven by self interest as per all organisations and the governing board of FISA is populated by very influential representatives of the Automotive Industry which is what you would expect when you think about it. It is an opportunity to direct and influence the direction of motorsport which best reflects your own strengths as a manufacturer.

Audi had no choice in stopping rallying as did all the other teams, it was banned after the death of Henri Toivonen and the near death incidents involving spectators. FISA banned Grp B, Audi had nothing to do with it! Citroen/Peugeot have not been winning ever since either - Mitsubishi, Subaru etc have dominated too!! Get your facts right!

It was a normally aspirated V6 you morons designed and developed specifically for the 6R4; a massive investment by BL but all came to nought when Audi stopped winning and got Group B cas banned. They couldn't stand the fact that Lancia and Peugeot were better than them and Peugeot /Citroen have been winning ever since.. so Audi are stil sulking.
The engine ended up being the engine in the Jaguar XJ220; not a lot of people know that haha.
-
@fivenine Actually it was not a modified Rover v8. It did use a modified Rover v8 during chassis development though, but never raced with it. The engine was bespoke and is thought to be the first engine specifically designed for rallying. The guy who designed it was an ex-employee of Cosworth and it's supposed to use some design elements of the Cosworth DFV.
Years later a turbo version of the engine was used in the Jaguar XJ220.

Still the best sounding rally car of all time !!! Many a cold wet time spent standing in forests just waiting the beasts to arrive

it wasnt a twin turbo. yes it was a modified rover v8. but it was naturally aspirated, you would hear the turbo's unloading through waste gates etc....
