The third installment of the University of Southern California's Body Computing Conference was held on October 9, 2009, hosted by Leslie Saxon, chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

The first panel discussion, "The Technology Continuum: Games to High End Medical Diagnostics," was moderated by Dana Mead, partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

Panelists included Don Jones, vice president of business development at Qualcomm; Gadi Amit, principal designer and founder of NewDealDesign; Brian Fitzgerald, deputy division director of electrical and software engineering at the Food and Drug Administration; Anne DeGheest, founder of Medstars; and Ashish Soni, director of ITP for the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.

Dana Mead led a discussion among business experts, designers, engineers and policymakers regarding the market for mobile and wireless-enabled health devices in addition to models for paying for these new technologies. Don Jones provided insight on how telecommunication companies are targeting weaknesses within the health-care system. Gadi Amit showcased NewDealDesign's FitBit, a new calorie tracker designed to creatively engage the consumer. Anne DeGheest revealed some promising start-ups in the wireless sensor market. Ashish Soni discussed the IT and gaming aspects of new medical applications. With questions surrounding a slew of new medical applications being developed for consumer use on the iPhone, Blackberry and other smartphone devices, Brian Fitzgerald assured attendees that these phones will never be regulated as medical devices, removing a large obstacle to the proliferation of these technologies.
