The great tragedy of 14th Dalai Lama has been allying himself with the US from 1956 on. He was trying the same strategy as the 13th who allied himself with the British.
The difference was: the British wanted a buffer state but not to challenge - and dismember - China as the US did, and also China was very weak 1912 - 1950.
HHDL is very much at the end of the road politically.
