Slug pellets may kill the snails and slugs in your garden, but they cost money as well as being toxic to more than just the intended pests. Also, they actually attract slugs and snails, so may increase your problems as young shoots appear in Spring.
The thrifty gardener shows you a free way to rid your garden of snails and slugs ... and some choices of how to 'dispose' of the results.

  • Don't toss them over the fence to your neighbors' because it simply isn't a nice thing to do. Period.

  • Isn't nice for the snail, or the neighbour?

  • Thanks for the interesting vid... though I must say, the fact that there are people (and more than just a few) who would actually worry about harming a snail or slug is just absurd and evidence of a society ripe for the picking.

  • Glad you found the video interesting, 59Gretsch.

Regarding those who would prefer not to harm snails or slugs, I guess it's each to their own. At least with an option that involves no killing, those such as Buddhists whose beliefs prevent them from killing any living creature still have a way to protect their vegetables from the damage they can create.

  • You can also freeze them.Them tap your container out into a bag them bin them.

  • Most snails I hear are pretty edible. Cook them in high enough temperatures to kill off any parasites, and voila.

  • @menderfire9 hell if theyre coming from my neighbour, Ill invite him oover to dinner and grind them up in his food!!!

  • Look down!

See those two things called Feet?

Stop being politically correct, they are snails and slugs for Christ's sake.

Do what most Women do, they make their Husband crawl on his hands and knees.

Then make him toss the Slugs and Snails onto the walk where you can kill them Naturally with those two things called Feet.

Then make him hose the remains back into the garden, which adds to as you know, the richness of your soil.

Ask my Wife, it really does works!! LOL

  • Where do you find them i want to keep them as a pet but I can never find any

  • I just put them in my compost pile.

  • snails feel just exactly like slugs only that slugs are more slimey and will leave a bigger mess on your hand and your hand will smell pretty bad but other than that they are fine to pick up.

Another way to get rid of them is to go sell them to a french restraunt...

  • @thriftygardener Thanks for nice video! I 'm one who hates killing stuff, but I have 50 pots with young veggies; surrounded by 40 acres of grass & slugs. I see that slugs love the same food we love so I put out lots of little piles of dinner for them under my pots & cover the little dinners with garbage bags or news paper & collect the slugs with a spoon into a cup with a bit of chlorx or salt water every evening. Works great 4 me, no slugs in my pots anymore. The down side is the killing thing.
