Italian baritone Pasquale Amato (1878-1942) sings Di Provenza il mar, from Verdi's La traviata.
One of the great baritones, known for his ringing top notes, smooth legato and fine phrasing, Amato reached the height of his fame at the MET, where he frequently partnered Enrico Caruso. In 1910, Amato created the role of Jack Rance in Puccini's La Fanciulla del West, although he never recorded any of it.
Recorded in 1914.
I don't like that much the at times rather muffled pronounciation / over-darkened vowels. And: rhythmically the extravagances are at the limit in my taste ... NOT EVERYTHING from the past is that much golden. But it's worth studying it. So, thanks for the upload, anyway. A. von Uri, Switzerland.

They sure knew how to sing in those days...This is the guy who created the role of Jack Rance in Puccini's "La Fanciulla del West" for the Metropolitan Opera. Too bad he isn't still available...
