You are absolutely correct. I have my own community online. It is taking off too. I love it. Gilda, recently I have been thinking a lot about this. I am doing what I am supposed to do. I need to just keep doing it. No matter how I feel at the moment, things are working in my favor. I know this. I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It is all good.
I have always liked him alot! He is one of those people who has truly redefined himself constantly! Bielat is a wonderful teacher who has worked with students at Schoolcraft College who I now work with at CCS....they are well trained, smart, and eager to work. They are a joy to have in classes.
I used to think there are perfect places, absolutely perfect. There is always something lacking, even if it is not immediately apparent. From where I sit, I see that you are creating an arts community for yourself via your extension into the online spaces. The same people post on your sites and believe in you and your works; they follow your words with eagerness and anticipation....I am one of them. Its a different manifestation of community, a new definition.
Gilda, It IS paradise. I love it here. No snow. No ice. Everything is bright and colorful. I have everything at my fingertips. It is urban, but small town like. I really do love it here. I am not even 5 minutes away from the Gulf of Mexico or Tampa Bay on the other side. There are beaches and wild animals all around. It is gorgeous here. However, there is not the same KIND of art scene. That is what I really miss.
Gilda, the funny thing about Bielat is you would never think of all this to look at him. I mean that is what struck me when Richard Axsom and I curated the Artist's Studio show years ago. I thought "This guy looks like he could be a trucker or a plumber or whatever! I liked that about him. He is a great guy and a wonderful artist!
I had a BALL spending the day with Bielat! He has created his own little paradise in Ferndale. I didnt realize how tightly he has ordered and re-ordered his artistic life, between working in the studio, teaching his classes, and casting in his foundry. The part I didnt show was a tour of his home; he has a fabulous little house filled with an art collection to die for! Every square inch has magnificent works, and there was a story for each.
When I was in Miami Beach last December, I just reveled in the atmosphere and the weather. Palm trees in the front yards. Walking on the beach. Sitting on the porch of my hotel at night with a movita [?] what ever it was it tasted great. And the breezes! I could take this. My friend Ed Littlejohn who lives there full time says its paradise. I believe it....
Gilda, that is the funny thing. It isn't really I don't want to go back to Detroit. It is more about I don't want to leave here! I would be a fool to give up my life here. I was just sitting in my junglesque Florida backyard watching the tall trees sway. I thought "This is what Florida must have looked like before civilization!" Also even though my job is challenging, it is GOOD job. I have lots of time for my art and money to pay for it. I guess it is a case of melancholia.
I know you dont want to come back here....I also long for the days with Katie was little and shorter than me, and needed me more. But those days are gone, and I enjoy discussing Ancient Literature with the young woman she has become. A world traveler, too. I loved the works you showed and the way in which they document both the person you were and the one you are now. You are right...we are lucky to be artists and have the ability and wherewithall to document our existences thusly.
some interesting effects you get there....I liked the drips on the snail shape...And No Go Home
