Samsara means "to wander on endlessly". Peter Russell discusses how we wandering on through life seeking one transient satisfaction after another, not realizing that that which we seek is our true nature. Nirvana means "to extinguish" as in blowing out a flame. Knowing our true nature blows out the flame of desire that drives the endless wandering on.

  • Unfortunately, I wrote my previous comment out of craving (unfortunately, like most (or maybe all) of the actions that I do).

However, I think that what I wrote in my previous comment is accurate.

  • I think that animals (the living beings which the speaker described as being in a state of ease) are, at most times, not in a state of ease, but, rather, are in a state of craving and discomfort (and, of course, in a state of ignorance more severe than almost all human beings). I think that the Buddha described the experience of being in the animal realm as being like being in a filthy uncomfortable pit.

  • Excellent! I didn't know the roots of these important - so often misunderstood - words. Thank you!
