  • Hi Liam thanks for responding. I was asking because I was told most Morris players use a D/G. I'm just starting out (1 week!) and I want to learn Irish and Morris.

  • Hiya, in the past, the majority of oncertina's were made in C/G. In English folk music C was quite a dominant key for squeeze box players as a lot of early melodeons only came in C. During the folk revival of the 50's and 60's D/G became more popular because they are better keys for fiddle players. cont....

  • cont...Peter Kennedy was one of the first people to use a melodeon in D/G which soon became the standard key for melodeon in England and so most of the popular repertoire slowly drifted into D/G with the occasional A tune. Because of the dominance of D/G melodeon in English music nowadays, you'll find that C is not a popular key for sessions or joining in with other people as most musicians don't use it much.

  • I'll cut this short here as this could go on for a while - but, thats the basic scenario. A lot of morris musicians mostly play in G in my experience which means C/G or G/D can be used for most of the tunes. I personally really like the pitch of C concertina's and melodeons...erm.. hope that wasn't too painfully boring....all the best LIAM!

  • are you playing a C/G box?

  • Yes it is indeed a C/G.....feel free to ask more questions! cheers LIAM!
