Paramount wanted Kirstie Alley to reprise the role in ST3. But she had got positive reviews for her work in ST2 and a TV movie she had made, so her asking price was more than they were willing to pay.
-
the fact she was half romulan was in the film's novelization, out at the time. So was a scene where she tampered with the burial tube before launch.
-
@ACLTony well, maybe people doesn't know that she was half Romulan.

@Xerxes2005= Some people say, they are more like Nazis.

I think both actresses did a terrific job with the clues they were given about the character- Kirstie Alley ran with the "none of the facial immobility of a Vulcan" script note and made that work, while Robin Curtis' more stoic version fitted well into the context of the third movie- I don't find it unlikely that also Saavik matured/became more stoic when Spock died, although I think Curtis sounded slightly TOO unemotional at the part when Saavik told Kirk that David was dead.

Thanks!

@spacebumwa U may hav a better memory of the book than I. Did it explain how they came to boff given her logic? And I am wondering, did u picture the Kirstie Alley Saavik or the Robin Curtis Saavik?
-
@yourworsthell Yes, he knew Kirk was his father. He even calls him an "overgrown boy scout" to his mother.
-
I read that book. She had a tattoo on her shoulder, and explained to him after uhhh, they boffed that she grew up on a slave colony. And, that Spock had rescued her when she was a child.

In the novelization of Star Trek III they did boff.
More likely a future romance between Kirk's son and Sulu than Saavik.

Robin Curtis was much more realistic in her portrayal of a Vulcan/ Romulan mix. Kirstie did an OK job, but was emotionally "wishy-washy" in an almost weak way. If you read the novels & view classic Trek and Next Generation shows, Romulans are emotional, but stoic and passionate. They try to portray strength. Robin did a pretty good job of that. Her stoicism fit in with typical Romulans and Vulcans. Too many people are judging by the "cuteness factor" instead of quality. Robin's acting = an A+
