No, you cannot use them on gas but they are fine for water.

Yes, If you can use a solder joint they are preferred but push fit joints work just fine!

Since they have O-rings and are for exposed installations they will not last even slightly as long as a soldered fitting that is pretty much forever.

I'd remove it to be on the safe side.

Some steel wool will clean it off easily.
