Tim...the bigger the stock, the larger the hammer. That 1/4" stuff was so small my 1000g hammer would destroy it. That ball pein is 650g. My biggest non-sledge is 1500g. I prefer Swedish style hammers, but your mileage may vary. Smallest is a dishing hammer that weighs 350 grams. Teeny.
Thank You. I'm banging on a railroad iron and using lump charcoal in the old BBQ grill. Haven't done anything other than bend a few pieces but this is inspiring me. I notice you don't use gloves - Is it safer to not use them? Your hammer is smaller than I thought it would be - I'm guessing you only use as large as necessary for the stock?

learn to keep your thumb off the top of your hammer its a bad habit and can cause nerve damage

Tim, gloves just cripple you. If it's too hot to hold, you use tongs, but I only use gloves when I weld.
