A terceira idade é uma etapa da vida de um indivíduo. A época em que uma pessoa é considerada na fase da terceira idade varia conforme a cultura e desenvolvimento da sociedade em que vive. Em países classificados como em desenvolvimento, por exemplo, alguém é considerado de terceira idade a partir dos 60 anos. Para a geriatria, somente após alcançar 75 anos a pessoa é considerada de terceira idade.
Com a chegada da terceira idade, alguns problemas de saúde passam a ser mais frequentes, e outros, incomuns nas fases de vida anteriores, começam a aparecer. A osteoporose e o Mal de Alzheimer são mais suscetíveis de acontecer nessa fase.
Não existe um consenso com relação à fronteira que limita a fase pré e pós velhice, nem tão pouco, quais são os indícios mais comuns da chegada nesta fase. Dados do IBGE demonstram que entre os anos de 1995 e 1999, no Brasil, o número de pessoas com mais de 60 anos cresceu em 14,5%.
