This yirdaki was collected in 1963 at Milingimbi by the late Jim Davidson, pioneer collector and dealer of Aboriginal art. When I first acquired this yirdaki I knew it was something special... the yellowing of the ochres from handling and usage, the lovely mellow acoustics reminiscent of field recordings of yesteryears, the oily patination on the mouthpiece, the gradual flare of the bore.
It is only now that I understand the full potential of this instrument in the expert hands of Adam Marrilaga. He brings it to life after having been in 'dormancy' for 46 years. First he plays his version of Gurdurrku (Brolga) followed by his own virtuosic style that is I reckon is the most exciting of any player I have heard.
