The Circus (1928) CHARLES CHAPLIN (PDM)

El circo (The circus) es una película estadounidense cómica de 1928, dirigida, producida y protagonizada por Charles Chaplin. Gracias a ella, Chaplin ganó un Óscar en 1928.1 Es protagonizada por Al Ernest Garcia, Merna Kennedy, Harry Crocker, George Davis y Henry Bergman.

La película muestra al personaje Charlot de Charles Chaplin siendo perseguido por un oficial de policía, tras haber sido confundido con un carterista. Al correr hacia la carpa principal de un circo en un intento de escapar la ley, los dueños allí confunden su huida como parte de un acto. Como reconocen los beneficios potenciales, Charlot es contratado en el circo, aunque pronto es evidente que no puede ser divertido a propósito, sino solamente de manera espontánea.

En cada función, a causa de su torpeza, desencadena la hilaridad del público y se convierte en la estrella del espectáculo. Charlot se enamora de la bella Merna, hija del director del circo, pero ella prefiere a Rex, el funámbulo. Charlot sabrá aceptar esta decisión y provocar su unión antes de abandonar el circo.

he Circus is a 1928 silent film written and directed by Charlie Chaplin with Joseph Plunkett as an uncredited writer. The film stars Chaplin, Al Ernest Garcia, Merna Kennedy, Harry Crocker, George Davis and Henry Bergman. The ringmaster of an impoverished circus hires Chaplin's Little Tramp as a clown, but discovers that he can only be funny unintentionally, not on purpose.

At a circus midway, the penniless and hungry Tramp (Chaplin) is mistaken for a pickpocket and chased by both the police and the real crook (the latter having stashed a stolen wallet and watch in the Tramp's pocket to avoid detection). Running away, the Tramp stumbles into the middle of a performance and unknowingly becomes the hit of the show.

The ringmaster/proprietor of the struggling circus gives him a tryout the next day, but the Tramp fails miserably. However, when the property men quit because they have not been paid, he gets hired on the spot to take their place. Once again, he inadvertently creates comic mayhem during a show. The ringmaster craftily hires him as a poorly paid property man.
